Computers Not Made In China

About 10 years ago it was difficult to find laptops, notebooks or desktops that were not made in China. Recently several big manufacturers started moving production to other countries. There also emerged a small market of local companies making computers that are focused on security and privacy running linux operating systems. This trend of moving manufacturing of computers out of China is speeding up and a few years down the road, many popular brands will have factories outside of China. It is important to note that most components are still made in China and what we are talking about here is really where the assembly step happens.

Computers

Vaio

VAIO was originally a brand of Sony, introduced in 1996. In 2014, Vaio became a seperate company and has been independant ever since. They are focusing on keeping broth the design an manufacturing in-house. All of their laptops are made in Japan and support japanese manufacturers. They are highly competitive in the personal and work notebook space.

Panasonic Toughbook

Panasonic is a Japanese manufacturer. They make electronic devices all over the world. Many of their notebooks are made in China, but one stands out. The Panasonic Toughbook is uses by many companies as well as law enforcement and emergency services sectors as a rugged laptop. This is, as the name suggests, the toughest laptop you can buy. All of the Toughbook line is manufactured to the highest possible standards in Japan.

Purism

Purism is a niche computer manufacturer focusing on privacy and security. They design several notebooks and mini desktops and even phones from scratch. They many security and privacy features you will not find in any other computer. They manufacture everything in the US. They do ship with their own operating system that is based on linux. While it can run Microsoft Windows applications, it does not run Microsoft Windows itself. If you care about privacy and security this is the best of the best.

System 76

System 76 is also a niche manufacturer. They care deeply about where the componants are made and try to use opensource firmware and other components. They manufacture in the US and ship with operating system based on linux.

HP

HP gets an honorable mention. They do make some computers in China, however they are moving all of their manufacturing slowly to other countries. In the US laptop market, the higher end laptops are now made in USA. This is constantly changing, so do a bit of research on Amazon to see where the specific laptop you want is manufactured. I wanted to feature HP because they are really trying to move their manufacturing and will be all out of China soon.
